Money tracking gets a bad reputation for a reason: most of us learned it as restriction, guilt, and endless self-correction.

When your nervous system links money to safety, a simple glance at your bank account can feel like danger, and that’s when avoidance, overspending, or shutting down starts to make sense.

In this episode, I talk about why shame-based budgeting keeps you in survival mode and why you cannot build generational wealth from burnout.

Think of it like a body scan for your finances: you notice what’s there without judgment, which lowers the threat level and helps you move from fight, flight, freeze, or fawn into a steadier place where clear decisions are possible.

You’ll learn a simple three-part money tracking system focused on flow: what you’re receiving (income sources and totals), what you’re spending (or recycling back into the world), and the difference between the two.

We also explore value-based spending questions, how to sit with discomfort when numbers bring up emotion, and how that practice can expand your capacity to hold more money over time.

Why Money Tracking Matters

SPEAKER_00

Today's episode is all about the foundation of what I had built, my personal finance coaching on practical money strategy and what has really made a difference for me when it comes to money, to understanding numbers, to organizing my personal finances and working with my clients to organize their personal finances. That key practical strategy is money tracking. For many of us, the word tracking can be activating the body, might make you think of a budget, and it can trigger a specific kind of dread, thinking about spreadsheets and guilt and the pressure to optimize every single penny. And our generation has been taught that you need to spend less, you need to cut out your lattes, you need to do more, and that you need to have this strict control over your finances from white knuckling your way through budgeting apps until you're exhausted. And the truth that if it's causing you or has caused you anxiety in the past, it's not working, it's keeping you in survival mode, and you cannot build generational wealth from a place of burnout. So today I want to show you how you can track your money not as a task master, but as a compassionate witness. How to use the data that you gather and interpret, not as a means to shame yourself, but to free yourself. And how this simple, it's very simple practically to put in place. It's very simple. The simple shift can be the first step towards a future where money flows through you with ease, allowing you to create a world of love, peace, and joy for your children.

Why Budgeting Triggers Anxiety

SPEAKER_00

First, I want to talk about why traditional money tracking feels so heavy? It's because money is inherently tied to safety. The roof over our head, the clothes on our back, the food on our table, those basic necessities we need as humans to survive. And if we grew up in scarcity or inherited stories of instability, looking at our bank account isn't just an administrative task. It's emotional. It creates activation within the nervous system. And when we look at our spending and see something that doesn't align with our goals or our values, our nervous system often reacts with shame. I messed up, I'm bad with money, I'll never get this right, I'll never get ahead. And it can lead to hiding accounts or avoiding bills or overspending to soothe the stress. And it's a cycle of burnout. You try harder, you restrict more, you have more control, you feel worse, and you quit. And you think, oh, it's just not in the cards for me. But what if we shifted that perspective? What if money tracking, quote unquote budgeting, wasn't about restriction? What if it's about awareness and giving you more information to make more aligned decisions as time goes on? What if it's a way to check in with ourselves?

SPEAKER_01

Like a body scan for curiosity just to notice without judgment.

SPEAKER_00

When we approach numbers in this way, we lower the threat level, the possibility for the activation of the nervous system. We move from states of fight, flight, freeze or fawn into rest and digest, into safety. And in that safety is when true clarity emerges.

SPEAKER_01

So how do you track your money without burning out?

Track Money Like A Witness

SPEAKER_01

You simplify it. You focus on the flow.

SPEAKER_00

So I look I like to look at money in three phases. First, how much am I receiving? What's coming in?

SPEAKER_01

Where is it coming in from?

SPEAKER_00

Next, what am I spending or what am I recycling back into the world? And in that category, those purchases, does this purchase align with my values?

SPEAKER_01

Does it bring me joy? Does it support the future that I want for my family?

SPEAKER_00

And the third part is looking at okay, what am I receiving? What's coming in, what's my income total, minus my pattern on average, in all these different categories, the total of my expenses, my spending, or my recycling, and what's the difference? Am I spending more than I make? Am I recycling more out into the world than I receive?

SPEAKER_01

Or am I spending less than I make? And if that's the case, where's the extra money going?

SPEAKER_00

Is it going to a savings account? Am I investing it? Or is it getting swept up in miscellaneous funds that I've forgotten about? And it's so important to look at the numbers and do the math without judgment. To just observe. And if emotion does come up, if activation in the body does arise.

SPEAKER_01

Pausing and taking a deep breath and just being with a just noticing getting comfortable in the uncomfortable.

SPEAKER_00

Because sitting with discomfort is already getting you outside of your comfort zone.

SPEAKER_01

And that is life-changing.

SPEAKER_00

It may not seem like it in a moment, but the more that you practice it, the more you expand your capacity to hold more money. And when you see expenses that aren't in alignment with your values, that don't bring you joy, that don't maybe don't support the future that you want for your family.

SPEAKER_01

You just notice it. Oh, I was stressed.

SPEAKER_00

Or oh, I was self-sabotaging. Oh, my nervous system just needed some soothing in that moment. That's helpful to know. That's valuable data. It tells you where you need more support moving forward, not where you need more shame or guilt or punishment. And what's really cool about this approach is that it honors your nervous system, the wisdom of your body, recognizes that you are not a computer, you are not a robot. You're a human navigating this very complex world. And by tracking your money with compassion, you actually free yourself, you reclaim your power, and you stop letting money dictate your mood. And you get to start using it as the tool that it is to create the life you envision.
